May 25th. Trail Ride
May 20-24 Rides I have now passed 2200 miles of cycling this year, most of them on the rail trail. On Friday, May 21, I rode 47 miles, a roundtrip from my home in Torbert Village to Wolfe’s General Store in Slate Run, where I “wolfed” down a delicious Panini bread, roast beef and Swiss cheese sandwich. During my ride on that beautiful spring day, I had the pleasure of stopping to look at and photograph two milk snakes, one black rat snake and a wood turtle right on the trail along the way. A parade of colors greeted me also, a profusion of white blooming raspberry bushes, purple and white Dame’s rockets, yellow rockets and buttercups, and yellow-and-white daisy fleabane. Blasts of refrigerator-like cool air where runs come down to the trail kept me from getting overheated. I met a couple from Alexandria, Pennsylvania (near Huntingdon), who were on a multi-day bicycling trip; they had spent the previous night at the Tiadaghton Campground above Blackwell and were heading south to spend the night at Jersey Shore’s Gamble Farm Inn. Two other people I met riding during these days were friends Jim Welch, of Jersey Shore, on his recumbent bicycle; and Weldon Cohick, of Linden, well known for his expert knowledge of Pine Creek Valley (he manned the Darling Run Information Center on the rail trail near Ansonia for years). |
